Panerai returns to one of its most technically ambitious movement architectures with the new Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio PAM01784. Housed in a substantial 47mm Grade 5 titanium case, the watch turns its skeletonized P.2005/T movement into the dial itself, exposing its three barrels, gear train and distinctive horizontal tourbillon mechanism. Alongside the tourbillon, the hand-wound caliber incorporates a true GMT function, day/night indication and dial-side power-reserve display, while three series-connected barrels provide six days of autonomy. Despite its dimensions and mechanical complexity, extensive use of titanium keeps the complete watch to approximately 105 grams.
The Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio PAM01784 is housed in a 47mm case constructed from Grade 5 titanium, combining brushed surfaces with a contrasting polished titanium bezel. The lightweight material extends throughout the case construction and helps keep the complete watch to approximately 105 grams, despite the large proportions and mechanically complex caliber within.
A Grade 5 titanium caseback incorporates a sapphire crystal display window, providing another perspective on the skeletonized P.2005/T movement. Its open architecture reveals the movement’s titanium bridges and plates, gear train and three series-connected barrels, making the mechanical operation visible from both sides of the watch.
The crown is secured by Panerai’s signature crown-protecting bridge, maintaining the unmistakable Luminor profile despite the considerably more technical execution. A domed sapphire crystal protects the openworked display, while the sapphire-equipped caseback provides additional visibility into the movement. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).
Rather than employing a conventional dial, the PAM01784 uses the blue-treated architecture of the P.2005/T movement as the foundation for its indications. Numerals at the cardinal positions and the remaining hour markers are mounted directly onto the movement plate, leaving the gear train, barrels and tourbillon mechanism exposed beneath the sapphire crystal. Central hands indicate the local hours and minutes alongside a second time zone.
Small seconds are positioned at 9 o’clock, while an AM/PM indicator for the second time zone occupies the 3 o’clock position. The power-reserve indication appears on the dial side near 6 o’clock, allowing the remaining energy stored across the movement’s three barrels to be monitored without turning the watch over. Orange-tipped indication hands provide additional visual separation between the various functions.
Panerai uses multiple colors of Super-LumiNova to distinguish the indications in darkness. The hour markers, numerals, and hour and minute hands emit white light, while the GMT and AM/PM indications glow blue. The power-reserve indication uses green-emission Super-LumiNova, creating a clear visual hierarchy among the functions of the openworked display.
Panerai Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio
The “Officine Panerai Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titanio” (Ref#: PAM01784) is powered by the hand-wound mechanical movement, caliber P.2005/T with 31 jewels, 277 components and a frequency of 28,800 vph. Measuring 10.05mm thick, the skeletonized caliber features Panerai’s patented horizontal tourbillon, positioning its cage on an axis perpendicular to that of the balance and completing one rotation every 30 seconds. Three barrels connected in series contain a combined 1.36 meters of mainspring, while the true GMT function allows the local hour hand to be adjusted forward or backward in one-hour increments without disturbing the home-time indication. It also comes equipped with small seconds, an AM/PM indication and a power-reserve display. Power reserve can last up to 144 hours, or six days, when fully wound.
Mounted on this watch is a blue alligator leather strap secured by an adjustable Grade 5 titanium folding clasp, complementing the blue-treated movement architecture visible through the dial.
Panerai also supplies an additional blue rubber strap with a pin buckle, along with the screwdriver required to change the buckle, providing a more casual alternative to the alligator configuration.
