Panerai Introduces the New Luminor 42 Collection

Panerai continues its return to the fundamentals of the Luminor with a new three-watch collection inspired by the Ref. 5218-201/A that helped introduce the brand to the public in 1993. Following the historically influenced Luminor Marina Militare PAM05218, the new PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714 retain the straightforward dial, distinctive crown-protecting bridge and robust construction associated with the early Luminor, but introduce one significant change: for the first time, this classic configuration is presented in a more compact 42mm case. Offered with black, green or blue dials and water resistance increased to 500 meters, the trio brings the familiar Luminor formula into smaller proportions without abandoning its utilitarian character.

The new Panerai Luminor 42 models measure 42mm in diameter and 13.8mm thick, reducing the familiar 44mm proportions of the original 1993 commercial Luminor while retaining its recognizable architecture. The PAM01710 and PAM01711 use stainless steel cases combining brushed and polished surfaces, while the PAM01714 receives a matte black DLC coating. All three retain the rounded-square mid-case, solid lugs and sloping bezel characteristic of the Luminor design.

A screwed, solid 12-sided steel caseback protects the automatic movement within and features engraved identifying details rather than exposing the caliber through a display window. This closed construction reinforces the deliberately functional character of the collection and complements the substantial depth rating of these otherwise relatively compact Luminor models. Panerai Luminor 42 caseback The crown is protected by Panerai’s signature curved bridge and locking lever, one of the defining elements of the Luminor since its military origins. A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment protects the dial while contributing to the vintage-influenced profile of the case. Water-resistance can reach up to 500 meters (1,640 feet). The steel PAM01710 features a matte black dial, while the PAM01711 pairs its steel case with forest green. The black DLC-coated PAM01714 introduces a matte blue dial. All three maintain the intentionally sparse arrangement associated with early Luminor watches, with oversized printed Arabic numerals and hour markers, central hour and minute hands, and a recessed small-seconds display positioned at 9 o’clock. Panerai and Luminor signatures appear in white, with “L Swiss Made L” printed along the lower edge of the dial as a reference to the use of modern Super-LumiNova rather than the tritium identified by the historical “T Swiss T” marking. Ecru or beige luminous material fills the prominent printed numerals and markers as well as the blackened hour and minute hands, while the small-seconds hand is also luminous. Panerai Luminor 42 Collection

The new “Officine Panerai Luminor 42” collection (References below) are powered by the self-winding mechanical movement, caliber P.980 with 23 jewels, 177 components and a frequency of 28,800 vph. Based on a movement produced by ValFleurier, the P.980 measures 4.2mm thick and comes equipped with central hours and minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock and a stop-seconds mechanism that halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled for more precise time setting. Power reserve can last up to 72 hours, when fully wound. Mounted on these watches are sturdy canvas straps with tone-on-tone stitching, reinforcing the utilitarian character of the simplified Luminor design.
