Oris returns to its collaboration with Swiss leather specialist Cervo Volante for a new interpretation of the Big Crown Pointer Date, the pilot’s watch that has remained one of the brand’s signatures since its introduction in 1938. The latest edition combines the familiar 40mm stainless-steel case with a deep burgundy dial inspired by the autumn colors surrounding Oris’ Hölstein manufacture, complemented by a dark brown strap produced from sustainably sourced Swiss deer hide. Released as a special but non-limited edition, the watch continues the partnership that Oris and Cervo Volante established in 2022.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date x Cervo Volante is housed in a multi-piece stainless-steel case measuring 40mm in diameter, 12.2mm thick and 48.2mm from lug to lug, with a 20mm width between the lugs. Brushed surfaces across the upper portions of the lugs contrast with polished elements, while the characteristic fluted bezel preserves the vintage pilot-watch appearance that has long defined the Big Crown collection.

A screwed stainless-steel caseback incorporates a mineral glass display window providing a view of the automatic movement and its signature red rotor. Special engravings distinguish the caseback of this Cervo Volante edition while retaining the practical construction of the standard Big Crown Pointer Date.

The oversized screw-down crown remains one of the watch’s defining features, tracing its origins to the large crowns designed to make early pilot watches easier to operate. A double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on its inner surface protects the dial, while the polished fluted bezel frames the display. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).

The defining feature of this edition is its deep burgundy dial, a color inspired by the autumn landscape of the forests surrounding the Oris manufacture in Hölstein. Stylized Arabic numerals and cathedral-shaped hour and minute hands reinforce the vintage character of the design, while a railroad-style minute track and peripheral date scale provide the additional information associated with the Big Crown Pointer Date.

Rather than displaying the date through a conventional aperture, Oris uses its signature central pointer-date hand, which extends toward the numbered date scale around the perimeter of the dial. Its inverted arrow-shaped tip is highlighted in red, providing a small but distinctive contrast against the burgundy background while preserving the highly recognizable layout of the collection.

Super-LumiNova is applied to the cathedral-style hour and minute hands, Arabic hour numerals and markers along the minute track. Together with the strong contrast of the dial markings against the burgundy surface, the luminous treatment maintains the legibility expected from a design originally developed as a pilot’s watch.

The “Oris Big Crown Pointer Date x Cervo Volante” (Ref#: 01 754 7785 4038-Set) is powered by the self-winding mechanical movement, Oris caliber 754-1, based on the Sellita SW200-1, with a frequency of 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with central hours, minutes and seconds, Oris’ central pointer-date display, instantaneous date change, date correction and a stop-seconds function for more precise time setting. The automatic movement also features Oris’ signature red oscillating weight, visible through the caseback. Power reserve can last up to 41 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted on this watch is a dark brown Cervo Volante deer hide strap equipped with a quick-change system. The leather comes from wild red deer culled as part of Switzerland’s population-management programs, using hides that might otherwise be discarded. Cervo Volante processes the material using natural vegetable tanning in Switzerland and deliberately preserves variations and imperfections in the hide, giving each strap an individual appearance.
