Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Sylt
It’s been nearly two decades since Blancpain announced a commitment towards marine protection. Since then we’ve heard of various initiatives aimed at protecting terrain and diverse aquatic species. This latest “Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Sylt” is dedicated to protecting the biosphere on the North Sea coast, specifically at the Rantumbecken nature reserve on the island of Sylt, in Germany. The non-profit organization Aquatil and the Jordsand association are jointly building protected breeding and resting spots for migratory birds. Blancpain will be donating 1,000 euros per sale to protect Sylt’s peaceful sanctuary, on the edge of the Wadden Sea.The 43mm case is made of grade 23 titanium with a satin-brushed finish. This alloy contains aluminum and vanadium, which is rarely used in the watch industry because it requires some demanding machining work. But, despite that titanium is ideal for diver watches for providing high resistance to pressure, corrosion, and its lightweight. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a solid white gold roter decorated by the silhouette of a bird, while the rest of the space was colored green. This engraving is a symbol of Blancpain conservation on Sylt.Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel with a green ceramic insert that features Liquidmetal® markers. It comes equipped with a screw-down crown embossed with the Blancpain's "B" logo. All topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Water-resistance can reach up to 300m (984 feet).

Time is exhibited on a green dial with a hand-crafted vertical satin finish, while circling around are rounded index markers made of Liquidmetal®, an alloy suited to avoid distortions. The rectangular baton-style central hands are based on the original vintage look of this model, which are sometimes also referred to as “syringe-hands”. These central hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.

The Blancpain logo and model name written in a white font appear on the upper-half of the dial. Unlike the “Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Mokarran” edition, this release has once again included a date aperture between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions, just as we were accustomed to seeing on many previous “Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe” releases.
