Panerai celebrates the centenary of its historic Florence boutique with the Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni Platinumtech PAM01734, a 100-piece limited edition connecting the manufacture’s Florentine heritage with one of its most recognizable case designs.
The boutique in Piazza San Giovanni opened in 1926 as “Orologeria Svizzera” and served not only as a retail location but also as a place where watches were assembled and repaired. A century later, the PAM01734 commemorates that history with details inspired by a rare Ref. 6152/1 prototype from the 1960s, including its distinctive “Panerai Firenze” dial signature.
The Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni PAM01734 features a 44mm case crafted from Platinumtech, Panerai’s proprietary platinum alloy containing 95% pure platinum and treated to achieve greater hardness. Its proportions reinterpret the imposing 47mm Luminor case of the historical Ref. 6152/1 prototype in a more wearable contemporary format, while retaining the familiar cushion-shaped architecture and signature crown-protecting bridge. The slightly curved, domed sapphire crystal is another historical reference, recalling the shape of the Perspex crystals used on Luminor watches during the 1960s.
Around the back, an open Platinumtech caseback incorporates a sapphire crystal that provides a view of the manually wound P.5000 movement. Its architecture is dominated by the large bridges associated with the eight-day caliber, allowing the mechanics behind the PAM01734’s unusually long autonomy to become part of the watch’s presentation. The transparent construction also differentiates this precious-metal edition from the steel PAM01794 created for the same Florence centenary, which instead receives a closed commemorative caseback.
The crown is protected by Panerai’s characteristic locking bridge, here executed in Platinumtech and distinguished by parallel grooves along the inner surfaces facing the crown. Above the dial, the domed sapphire crystal reinforces the vintage character of the anniversary model while providing modern protection in place of the historical Perspex construction that inspired its profile. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (328 feet).
The PAM01734 features a circular-brushed green sandwich dial inspired by the rare Ref. 6152/1 prototype from the 1960s. Its layered construction creates the characteristic recessed hour indications associated with Panerai, while the simple two-hand arrangement preserves the functional clarity of the historical design. Most significantly, the words “Panerai Firenze” appear beneath the 12 o’clock numeral, directly referencing the vintage prototype while taking on additional meaning for a watch celebrating 100 years of Panerai’s historic Florence location.
Vintage-inspired double pencil hands receive a gold-effect finish, providing a warm contrast against the green dial while complementing the precious-metal character of the Platinumtech case. The absence of a date window, running seconds or other complications leaves the dial particularly uncluttered, placing the focus on its oversized cardinal numerals, hour indices, distinctive hands and commemorative Firenze signature.
Green Super-LumiNova is used for the hour indications and vintage-inspired double pencil hands, providing strong nighttime visibility while emphasizing the depth of the sandwich dial construction. The luminous treatment shines through the cut-out numerals and indices, preserving one of the most recognizable functional characteristics of Panerai’s historically military-oriented watches.
Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni Platinumtech
The “Officine Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni Platinumtech” (Ref#: PAM01734) is powered by the in-house manually wound mechanical movement, caliber P.5000 with 21 jewels, 113 components and 21,600 vph. It comes equipped with two spring barrels, a Glucydur balance and Incabloc Parechoc anti-shock protection, displaying hours and minutes through its deliberately simple two-hand arrangement. Power reserve can last up to 192 hours, or 8 days, when fully wound.
Mounted on this watch is a black Tuscan calfskin leather strap hot-stamped with the Florentine lily, extending the watch’s connection to Florence beyond the dial and case. It is secured by a trapezoidal buckle crafted from white gold,
while an additional green rubber strap provides a more casual alternative that complements the color of the dial.
The PAM01734 is presented in a mahogany box featuring a metal plaque depicting the historic entrance of Panerai’s Florence boutique.
