Time set aside to engage in meaningful endeavors should always be celebrated. And if in such a pursuit we get to marvel at a new captivating timepiece, we can call it a win-win. Blancpain has released a new “Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe” in a limited “Mokarran” edition, which is dedicated to protecting the severely endangered great hammerhead shark.
The 43.6mm case is made of satin-brushed black ceramic with a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. On this flip-side we can see the gold square-head micrometric regulating screws; plus the gold oscillating weight that has been engraved with a hammerhead shark.
Despite ceramic not being as sturdy as metal, it’s strong points reside in a lighter wrist weight and higher resistance to corrosion when immersed in salt water. This is a very good feature if anyone actually wants to put this diver watch to use.
Mounted to the case is a unidirectional satin-brushed titanium bezel with a green ceramic insert, which features Liquidmetal® hour-markers. All topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Water-resistance on this timepiece can reach up to 300m (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a gorgeous sun-burst finish green dial with rounded index markers made of Liquidmetal®, an alloy suited to avoid distortions. The rectangular central hands are based on the original vintage look of this model, which have along with the hourly index markers, been fitted with a luminescent coating for an enhanced legibility. Visible even in a deep-dive scenario aimed towards the depths of the ocean.
And besides the Blancpain logo and model name written in a white font on the upper-half of the dial, there are no other distractions from this mesmerizing green hue. Even the date aperture has been excluded from this new release, despite its presence on previous editions.
