The sky is falling and Audemars Piguet has embraced the phenomenon to reintroduce us to one of its most celebrated models, in a limited edition run. We’re referring to the one and only “Royal Oak” in its chronograph capacity with a unique light-blue “Grande Tapisserie” dial. Let’s not push the sky away, but rather reach out and touch it AP style.
The historic Gérald Genta designed case appears here in a 38mm diameter and 11m thickness made out of 18k white gold with a transparent exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
Mounted to the case is the iconic octagonal bezel, held in place by 8 exposed screws. It comes equipped with two solid push-pieces that activate the chronograph functions, while between them lay protecting crown guards and the screw-in setting crown. All topped by a glare-proofed sapphire crystal that hangs over a peaceful clear sky-like hue. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
Time is exhibited on the aforementioned serene light-blue with “Grande Tapisserie” pattern dial with 18k white gold applied hour index markers. While a dark blue external zone circles the perpihery of the dial with a ring of white printed second markings and longer minute markers.
It features three snailed sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, a sub-seconds at 6 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position. Plus a date aperture has been placed between the 4 and 5 o’clock spots.
On the upper-half of dial we find the iconic “AP” logo made out of white gold, with the long-form black printed version of their Audemars Piguet branding. The 18k white gold hands and hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
