Zenith Pilot Type 20 Blueprint Limited Edition
Skeleton dials and exhibition case backs have always granted us a sneak peak into the laborious intricacies of horological feats. But, for this new “Pilot Type 20 Blueprint” edition the designers at Zenith have actually placed the production plans with many of its aesthetically defining technical calculations directly on the dial. This makes for a rather unique and geeky layout, worthy of a limited edition release.
The 45mm case is made of stainless-steel in a large round format similar to the watches seen during the early days of aviation. On the steel case back Zenith has engraved this timepiece with their historic “Zenith Flying Instruments” logo. That consists of a vintage aircraft and other embossed embellishments and inscriptions, plus the limited edition number for each of these uniquely numbered pieces.
It comes equipped with a big onion-style setting-crown, which is reminiscent of the ratcheted winding crowns seen on vintage aviation watches made for military pilots back in the 20th century. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal with a water-resistance that can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue dial that aptly presents us with the “blueprint” design of this iconic layout. The production plans that go into making this dial (which would usually be kept as trade secrets), here appear in full display
This is a double layered dial design split between two parts: the aforementioned “blueprint” portion directly on the dial, while directly printed on the sapphire crystal hovering above are: the large stencil-style Arabic numerals, and a ring of white minute index markers with double-digit numerals for every five-minute increment.
Further details included on the crystal are the Zenith star and “MONTRE D’AERONEF TYPE 20” inscription; while “PILOT” and “EXTRA SPECIAL” can be seen on the lower-half. The central rhodium-plated hands and numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.

The “Zenith Pilot Type 20 Blueprint Limited Edition” (Ref#: 03.2435.679/51.I012) is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber Elite 679 with 26 jewels and 28,800 vph. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 55 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted to the watch is a blue calfskin leather strap, secured to the wrist by a stainless-steel pin-buckle.
