Zenith expands its high-frequency Defy Extreme collection with the new Defy Extreme Ultraviolet, introducing a vivid violet color scheme to the brand’s most technically advanced sports chronograph. Based on the 45mm Defy Extreme first released in 2021, the new reference retains the collection’s architectural titanium case, 1/100th-of-a-second chronograph, and interchangeable strap system. Its violet-tinted sapphire dial and matching movement details draw inspiration from ultraviolet light, which Zenith uses to symbolize energy, intensity, and mechanical performance.
The Zenith Defy Extreme Ultraviolet is housed in an angular microblasted titanium case measuring 45mm in diameter, 15.4mm thick, and 51mm from lug to lug. Its matte, nearly reflection-free surface emphasizes the sharp geometry of the case, bezel, and integrated crown guards, while titanium keeps the substantial construction lighter than its dimensions might suggest.
Turning the watch over reveals the El Primero 9004 movement through a sapphire exhibition caseback. A violet-colored star-shaped oscillating weight extends the Ultraviolet theme to the reverse of the watch, while the movement’s layered architecture reinforces the technical character of the Defy Extreme collection.
The screwed-in crown is flanked by two angular chronograph pushers, preserving the bold and highly functional layout of the original Defy Extreme. A sapphire crystal protects the dial and allows the violet-tinted display to remain clearly visible from multiple angles. Water-resistance can reach up to 200 meters (656 feet).
The defining feature of the Defy Extreme Ultraviolet is its violet-tinted sapphire dial, which provides a partially transparent view of the movement beneath. Matching violet subdials are arranged across the openworked display, creating a layered composition that combines vivid color with the watch’s industrial, geometric architecture.
Central hours and minutes are accompanied by small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, and a 60-second counter at 6 o’clock. A chronograph power-reserve indicator sits at 12 o’clock, while the central chronograph hand completes one full rotation every second to display elapsed time down to 1/100th of a second.
Rhodium-plated, faceted hands and hour markers provide contrast against the violet background. Both are coated with green-emitting Super-LumiNova SLN C1, creating a striking luminous display against the translucent purple dial.
Zenith Defy Extreme Ultraviolet
The “Zenith Defy Extreme Ultraviolet” (Ref#: 97.9100.9004/80.I209) is powered by the automatic El Primero 9004 caliber, a certified chronometer equipped with two independent escapements. The timekeeping escapement operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5Hz, while a separate chronograph escapement runs at 360,000 vibrations per hour, or 50Hz, allowing the central chronograph hand to complete one rotation every second and measure intervals to 1/100th of a second. Its functions include central hours and minutes, small seconds, a 30-minute counter, a 60-second counter, and a chronograph power-reserve indication. Power reserve can last up to 50 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted on this watch is a violet rubber strap secured by a folding clasp, reinforcing the Ultraviolet color scheme while complementing the dark microblasted titanium case.
Zenith also includes a matching microblasted titanium bracelet and a black high-performance Velcro strap, all compatible with the collection’s tool-free interchangeable strap system.
