Zenith Defy Extreme Carbon
The world’s first off-road electric rally racing championship, called Extreme E, debuted in 2021. All these electric vehicles competing in international races created a need to track time and since Zenith is a founding member of this competition, they naturally became its official timekeeper. This inspired the new “Zenith Defy Extreme Carbon” watch crafted out of carbon fiber for the first time in a collection, which previously could only be had in titanium or gold options. The 45mm case is made of carbon fiber which has unique aesthetic patterns, while offering a lightweight and highly durable construction. Mounted to the case is a matching carbon bezel, while layered between that and the main case is an intermediate 12-sided bezel piece made of micro-blasted titanium. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The rotor has been given a black treatment to mimic the carbon case, and shaped as an openworked Zenith star logo.It comes equipped with two wide pushers to operate the chronograph functions made of carbon fiber, while the blocks they are positioned in, doubling as crown guards, are made of micro-blasted titanium. Then the knurled screw-down crown rising from between their midst, returns to the carbon fiber theme. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 200 meters (656 feet).Time is exhibited using a slightly tinted sapphire crystal dial with rhodium applied hour index markers, followed by a black ring with white printed minute markings. On the inner flange is a second grey ring with a white printed 100-scale that includes Arabic numerals for every 10-minute increments in a yellow font. There are three openworked counters with differentiating colors for their numerals and markings: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock in blue, a 60-minute counter at 6 o’clock in green, and sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock positions in white. On the upper-half of the dial a semi-circle appears to frame the Zenith logo, while also including a useful power reserve indicator. The dark themed carbon fiber aesthetics of this timepiece can be enhanced by opting for the black straps. Or the user can opt to liven things up by using the red strap and further highlighting the sense of color scattered throughout the dial. The central rhodium-plated hands and hour index markers have all been coated with a Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility.
