Vacheron Constantin Overseas Moon Phase Retrograde Date
For fans of Vacheron Constantin the retrograde indication is a feature found on the Patrimony collection. This unusual, yet ingenious display first appeared in the 1990 as part of their “Métiers d’Art” collection, although it was slightly different and featured a double retrograde indication. Now for the first time ever Vacheron has released an Overseas model with a retrograde date. This combination manages to mix technical sophistication with a sporty profile. The 41 mm case is made of stainless-steel with brushed surfaces and polished bevels. Mounted to the case is a fixed two part steel bezel with alternating brushed and polished finish. The juxtaposition of these contrasting embellishments creates a very unique six-sided bezel design. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a 22k gold oscillating weight adorned with a wind rose and bears the Geneva hallmark. It comes equipped with a screw-down fluted crown embossed with a Maltese cross. This watch was also constructed with a soft-iron casing ring that provides anti-magnetic protection. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a translucent blue lacquered dial with 18k white gold hour index markers, followed by a minute ring track. Circling around a sloped flange is a 60-minute scale in a slightly darker blue hue.The retrograde date is distributed on the upper-half of the dial, running from 9 to 3 o’clock with only odd numerals in white printed font. The current date is pointed out by the blue-tinted retrograde hand with an arrow tip. While on the lower half is a moonphase at 6 o’clock that allows to read the numbers of days that have passed since the last new moon, thanks to the aperture being graduated from 0 to 29 ½. This scale is based on the moon which takes approximately 29.5 days to make one full rotation around the Earth. The sword-shaped central hands and hour indices have all been fitted with a luminescent filling for an enhanced legibility. The center portion of the dial is also characterized by a sunburst satin-brushed finish.
