Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph Panda Dial

Initially introduced in 1991, but back in 2016 marked the renewal of the entire “Overseas Chronograph” collection by Vacheron Constantin. Since then this hefty watch suited for both sports or dress attire has kept expanding its options. After silver, blue, brown, and even a reverse panda dial, this latest release finally embraces a standard panda dial. The 42.5 mm cushion-shaped case is made of stainless-steel with vertically brushed surfaces and polished accents. Mounted to the case is a fixed two part bezel with an alternating brushed and polished finish. These contrasting embellishments and that unique bezel have become defining traits for the “Overseas” model. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a 22k gold oscillating weight adorned with a wind rose and bears the Geneva hallmark. It comes equipped with two pushers to operate the chronograph functions. Those as well as the setting-crown in between, are all embraced by knurled screw-down pieces. This reinforcement allows for a water-resistance that can reach up to 150 meters (492 feet). Time is exhibited on a silver dial with applied hour indices, followed by a minute track. This silver hue has a sunburst satin finish that adds a touch of texture. Circling around the sloped flange is a black 60-minute scale with Arabic numerals for every 5-minute increment. There are three snailed black sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position and a small-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The combination of silver and black qualify this watch for the “panda dial” moniker. The central sword-shaped gold hands and hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a steel framed date window between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions with a white background.
