Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222
Another blast from the past at Watches & Wonders 2022 came in the form of the 45th anniversary reissue of the “Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222”. At the time of its original release in 1977 this watch designed by Jorg Hysek, represented the first model of VC to truly fit in among the luxury sport segment, competing with models like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Patek Philippe Nautilus. The 37mm case is made of 18k yellow gold with a vertical brushed finish, while mounted to the flat base is a prominent fluted bezel. There is a Maltese cross made of polished white gold soldered onto the flat base of the case, near the 5 o’clock position.Unlike the original that had a solid caseback, this reissue has a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movements. This is an ultra-thin movement and features a hand-engraved oscillating weight with the original “222” inscription, plus its hallmarked with the Geneva Seal.It comes equipped with a knurled setting-crown also embossed with a Maltese cross. The gold screws that connect the case to the bracelet are exposed, but manage to blend in with their surroundings. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a matte gold-toned dial with applied hour index markers, followed by a ring of very discreetly black printed minute markings. Overall the dial has been left with an elegant yet simple layout, since the main beauty of this watch stems from the case, bracelet, and subtle embellishments. The central baton-style gold hands and straight hour index markers have all been coated with a Super-LumiNova in green, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date window at 3 o’clock that has been offset by an outer gold rim, which attributes it with a more prominent presence.
