Since 2019, Ulysse Nardin has been producing intricate silicon marquetry dials, and in 2023 it debuted the striking Blast Free Wheel Marquetry in blue. The 2025 follow-up continues this avant-garde vision in vivid green, launching as a 10-piece limited edition available only in the United States. The new Ulysse Nardin Blast Free Wheel Marquetry Silicon Green (Ref#: 1760-401LE-8A-GREEN/3A) preserves the dynamic Blast case silhouette and signature dial layout while enhancing the futuristic vibe through its circuit board-inspired color palette.
Crafted from 18k white gold, the angular case of the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry Silicon Green measures 45mm in diameter and 12.4mm thick. Its dramatic open-lug geometry connects it to the broader Blast family, while the box-like profile is softened by the curvature of its bowl-shaped sapphire crystal. This flowing, sculptural form allows light to interact beautifully with the dial’s green silicon mosaics.
Around back, a secondary sapphire crystal provides a wide view into the complex movement, allowing light to pass through the case while preserving symmetry between the top and bottom sapphire bowls. The transparent case architecture plays an important role in showcasing the dial’s layered mechanics without relying on full skeletonization.
A screw-down white gold crown is set between sharply faceted crown guards, maintaining the case’s geometric integrity. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet), offering protection against incidental splashes and light moisture exposure.
The dial is dominated by a remarkable green silicon marquetry, composed of 103 hand-assembled silicon tiles, polished and matte-finished in alternating fashion. These slivers form a mosaic-style visual field that evokes the microscopic aesthetic of printed circuit boards, establishing a direct link to Silicon Valley’s influence on modern technology.
Rather than layering hands over a traditional movement, the Free Wheel format elevates key movement components, such as the tourbillon and barrel, above the dial plane. The flying tourbillon rotates at 6 o’clock, flanked by the gear train, anchor, and escapement, each mounted on transparent bridges to heighten the floating illusion. A rotating disc at 4 o’clock serves as a power reserve indicator.
No numerals or minute markers are present, reinforcing the watch’s status as a horological sculpture. The white-gold-toned hour and minute hands are centrally mounted and minimal, allowing the movement’s theatrical layout to dominate the composition.
