TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronometer
During LVMH Watch Week 2023 a few brands embraced the occasion to introduce some premium models. Such was the case for the new “TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronometer” released with a flyback version of the Heuer caliber 02 chronograph movement and a skeleton dial, sprinkled with blues and reds. Quick historical fact, the Monza originally debuted in 1975 to commemorate Niki Lauda’s first Formula One world championship title. The 42mm case is made of forged carbon fiber which imbues the majority of the case with the characteristic texture that makes each edition slightly unique. Height wise it measures in at 15.3mm, but these hefty proportions are kept lightweight thanks to the alloy option. On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Unlike the frontal portion the back is crafted out of a black PVD grade 5 titanium. It features an openworked blackened rotor decorated with red font.It comes equipped with two DLC-coated steel push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions, plus a riveted setting-crown engraved with the Heuer logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on a skeletonized dial with blue hour indices, followed by a white printed minute track. A tachymeter scale also appears in white print on a sloped flange, with red highlights and a blue portion for the pulsometer. There are two sub-dials covered with translucent blue sapphire crystals: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a small seconds at the 6 o’clock spot. They both include red hands, blue highlights and a “FLYBACK” inscription. The sword-shaped central hour/minute hands, hour indices and date window have all been fitted with a luminescent filling for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date window with a red frame at 9 o’clock.
