TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12

TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12

Few watches are as closely associated with motorsport as the TAG Heuer Monaco. First introduced in 1969 as one of the world’s first automatic chronographs and the first square water-resistant chronograph wristwatch, the Monaco has become a symbol of racing culture and unconventional design. Over the decades, the collection has evolved through heritage-inspired references and highly technical creations alike. Presented during the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco 2026, the new Monaco Speed 12 takes the concept in an entirely new direction, combining the iconic square case with a reimagined Spin Time display developed by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 is housed in a 40mm Grade 5 titanium case with a combination of brushed and polished finishes. While retaining the unmistakable square profile that has defined the Monaco since 1969, the architecture is far more technical and contemporary than traditional models. The lightweight titanium construction contributes to the watch’s modern character, while the suspended movement creates a striking sense of depth within the case.

Turning the watch over reveals a sapphire crystal caseback offering a full view of the calibre TH84-00. The movement appears suspended within the case thanks to four black DLC-coated titanium arches positioned at the corners. Visible from both sides, the calibre becomes an integral part of the overall design rather than something hidden beneath the dial.

The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock and engraved with the TAG Heuer shield logo. A sapphire bezel surrounds the dial, while a domed sapphire crystal protects the display from above. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet).

The dial of the Monaco Speed 12 is entirely open-worked and draws direct inspiration from high-performance automotive engineering.

At the center sits a vertically grooved structure resembling an engine cover, while the overall layout creates the impression of looking into a finely tuned racing powerplant rather than a traditional watch dial.

Encircling the display is a black opaline minute track featuring white markings and red accents at five-minute intervals. The skeletonised central minutes hand is tipped in red and styled to resemble a dashboard instrument needle. The rhodium-plated TAG Heuer logo sits discreetly within the composition, allowing the mechanics to remain the focal point.

The most captivating element is the display of twelve rotating titanium pistons positioned around the dial. Engraved with black-lacquered Arabic numerals, these piston-shaped modules rotate at the beginning of each hour to reveal the current time.

As one piston returns to its resting position, the next rotates by 90 degrees, creating a dynamic animation that mimics the firing sequence of a twelve-cylinder engine. The result is one of the most original and visually engaging time displays ever fitted to a Monaco.

The “TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12” (Ref#: WBW2180.FT8133) is powered by the in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber TH84-00, and 28,800 vph. Developed and manufactured by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the movement comes equipped with a patented Spin Time-derived jumping-hour mechanism featuring twelve rotating piston-shaped hour indicators. Power reserve can last up to 45 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted on this watch is a black rubber strap with a textile-style embossed pattern, secured by a Grade 5 titanium folding clasp with double safety push-buttons.

The red stitching echoes the dial accents and reinforces the motorsport theme, while the lightweight titanium case and flexible rubber construction help balance the watch’s technical presence on the wrist.
