TAG Heuer Monaco Racing Blue
Over half a century later the TAG Heuer Monaco model has endured the test of time and become a contemporary classic. Since its original debut back in 1969 this square-cased sports watch has been spotted on the wrist of various celebrities and crafted in various styles. This latest “Monaco Racing Blue” edition is a tribute to the traditional French racing blue used by Gallic auto manufactures. Plus it has ditched some of the Monaco’s modern traits, opting instead for the classic crown on the left-side.The iconic square shaped 39 mm case is made of grade 2 titanium with an overall grainy sandblasted finish. On the flip-side is a mostly solid case back engraved with some technical details. But, it also features a round sapphire aperture which reveals parts of the mechanical movement and a red etched HEUER logo. The outer titanium portion has also been engraved with the “LIMITED EDITION” and “ONE OF 1000” inscription. There are two rectangular shaped push-buttons on the right-side of the case to operate the chronograph functions. The setting-crown is placed on the left-side of the case, matching the same placement found on its original 1969 release. All topped by a domed and beveled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on a silver dial with a sunray finish and rhodium-plated indices, followed by a circular minute track within the square shaped case that also includes blue dots near each hour mark. Plus those vintage-style horizontal markers that add a subtle nuance to the overall layout. There are two squared twin blue sub-dials with elegantly rounded edges: a small seconds at 3 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. They are slightly nestled within the dial in a “sandwich” layer style. The upper-half of the dial showcases the vintage “MONACO HEUER” logo in black print. A subtle detail that distinguishes this edition from previous options is the use of a sans-serif font for the “MONACO” wording. A dash of color has been added in the form of a lime-yellow central seconds hand and index marker at 12 o’clock. The central sword-shaped rhodium-plated hands and small dotted hour indices have all been fitted with a blue luminescence, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date window with black numerals, located at 6 o’clock.
