Since its original debut back in 1969 this square-cased sports watch has endured the test of time and become a contemporary classic. Part of its longevity can clearly be attributed to hanging off the wrist of various celebrities, such as Steve McQueen. But merit must be given to TAG Heuer for its various iterations, which has led to this limited edition design with an exquisite purple dial, for the first time-ever on a Monaco. The iconic square shaped 39mm case is made of stainless-steel with vertically brushed surfaces and casebands, while also boosting polished accents and lugs.On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a black open-worked rotor decorated with Geneva stripes and a purple column wheel. It comes equipped with two rectangular alternate shaped push-buttons on the right-side of the case to operate the chronograph functions. In between them is a setting-crown embossed with the TAG Heuer logo. All topped by a domed and beveled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being capable of reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).Time is exhibited on a gradient purple dial with a sunray finish. As the purple hue extends from the center it grows darker in color, until culminating in black corners. These two portions are separated by a ring of white printed minted markers, while each dotted hour mark is aligned with steel applied indexes. It features the classic tri-compax layout with two sloped square sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. While a small seconds with a polished steel hand, is highlighted by discreet white lines in the center of the lower-half.The central sword-shaped rhodium-plated hands and applied hour index markers, have all been fitted with a SuperLumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a black date window with white numerals, located at 6 o’clock.
