In 2020 times have been trouble, but milestones still need to be saluted. TAG Heuer is celebrating its 160-year anniversary, by releasing yet another fresh looking “Carrera” timepiece, in a limited edition run. For this occasion they have sought out inspiration from their vintage “Heuer Montreal” chronograph. It now reappears with a shiny up-beat color-scheme, in a no-date iteration.
The 39mm case is made of polished stainless-steel with a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The balance wheel seen on its flip-side has been engraved with the celebratory inscription “160 YEARS OF AVANT-GARDE” on a checkered flag background.
Mounted to the case is a polished steel fixed bezel without any scales. It also comes equipped with the standard mushroom-style chronograph pushers with a setting-crown in-between them. And maintains the angled lugs it featured back in the 1960’s, although in a slightly bulkier design to appropriate the increased case size.
All topped by a sapphire glass box with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet)
Time is exhibited on a white opaline dial with steel appliqué hour index markers, followed by a blue chapter ring that includes yellow dots for each index marker. Then we encounter a final white inner flange circling the periphery of the dial with a blue and red seconds track, which also doubles in functionality for the chronograph function.
It includes three blue sub-counters with azurage motif: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a sub-seconds at 6 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position. The central rhodium-plated hours/minutes hands, as well as the dotted index markers, have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. Despite their yellow appearance, they glow green in the dark.
