Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202
Audemars Piguet is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their iconic Royal Oak, originally conceived by Gérald Genta and manufactured by AP since 1972. That is half a century of what began as a single model and expanded to a wide range of collections, many of which are being updated during this historic milestone. Just like the outgoing 15202 reference, which makes way for the incoming “Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202” models with an all new caliber movement. The 39mm case is available in either stainless-steel, 18k yellow gold, 18k pink gold, or platinum with a mix of vertical brushed flat surfaces and polished edges, while mounted by the iconic “Royal Oak” octagonal shaped bezel in a matching alloy; in common all these options have exposed 18k white gold screws. This newly redesigned bezel features wider polished bevels that have made it a bit thinner. As a result the wrist presence may seem to have a flatter apparence. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition case back, which allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The gold oscillating weight with a carved out “50” years emblem, will only be featured on the models sold during 2022, which will make them some-what collectibles, as the current production continues on without this distinct characteristic.Compared with the previous outgoing caliber 2121, the new caliber 7171 is a bit thicker (3.2mm versus 3.05mm); although it was able to maintain the same exact case thickness of 8.1mm. This new caliber also offers a longer power reserve (55 versus 40 hours), plus an increased frequency that allows it to include a quick-set date.It also comes equipped with a screw-down crown adorned with the AP logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on either a blue (stainless-steel), smoked grey (18k pink gold), or smoked yellow gold-tone (18k yellow gold) dial, all with the iconic AP "Petite Tapisserie” motif, which is a pattern of small squares, obtained thru a hand guilloché that appear here with gold applied index markers. The only exception is the platinum case option that comes with a radially-brushed dial with a smoked green finish, which matches the same exact dial that the now discontinued platinum reference 15202 had showcased. The central gold hands and hour index markers have all been given a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture in the 3 o’clock position.
