Rolex Perpetual 1908

A new milestone was achieved by Rolex during this year's Watches and Wonders 2023 by releasing a brand new collection dubbed “Perpetual 1908”. As the press release proudly states “Since the brand’s creation in 1908, Rolex has pursued the fundamental conviction of its founder, Hans Wilsdorf, that the future of the wristwatch is inseparable from superlative performance.” In terms of aesthetics the 1908 is a tribute to their first Oyster Perpetual watches, while housed inside is the new caliber 7140 which was created by incorporating many of Rolex’s latest technology and following an exact protocol of unparalleled precision. The 39mm case is made of either 18k yellow or white gold with 9.50mm in thickness. Mounted to the case is a divided bezel with an upper domed part and lower finely fluted finish. As the press release explains “The silhouette of the 18 kt gold case as well as the design of the 1908’s dial reinvent the classic – yet very modern – spirit of the original Oyster Perpetual watches of 1931.”On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features an openwork oscillating weight in 18 karat yellow gold, plus a new Rolex Côtes de Genève decoration that differs from the traditional Côtes de Genève with a groove between each band, and diamond-cut chamfers on the bridges.It comes equipped with a knurled setting-crown embossed with the Rolex crown logo. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on either an intense white or matte black dial with gold faceted hour index markers and the Arabic numerals 3, 9, and 12. Circling around the flange is a black or white printed railroad minute track. Both dials have a fine satin finish and are reminiscent of the Cellini collection, but with enough nuance to make up its own unique aesthetics. The central hands are crafted out of white or yellow gold with an opened circle before the tip of the hour hand, while the minute hand is sword-shaped. There is also a small seconds counter at the 6 o’clock position. 

Rolex Perpetual 1908

The “Rolex Perpetual 1908” (References below) is powered by the brand new in-house self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 7140 with 38 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a Syloxi hairspring in silicon, Paraflex shock absorbers, Chronergy escapement, and small hacking seconds. Power reserve can last up to 66 hours, when fully wound.Mounted on the watch is either a black or brown alligator strap with tone-on-tone stitchings, secured to the wrist by a double folding Dualclasp in 18k yellow or white gold.For more up to date information visit the official Rolex website here.
