Rolex Explorer 40

In 2021 the iconic “Rolex Explorer” was slimmed down to size from 39 mm to its original 36 mm, just as it debuted back in 1953. During the same historic year in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everst, while also wearing that smaller-sized “Rolex Explorer”. This alteration was applauded by some and bemoaned by others, especially since the larger option was discontinued. The wait for bigger wrists is now over with the release of the new “Rolex Explorer 40”. The return of a larger Rolex Explorer comes in a 40 mm case made of the brands proprietary OysterSteel with vertical brushed surfaces, contrasted by polished bevels. The lug width measures in at 21mm with a thickness of 11.6mm, while the flipside has a screw-in caseback.Mounted to the case is a thin polished bezel which also contrasts well with the brushed finish of the main case. The smaller diameter of 36mm may have provided a more compact look, but this new 40mm is identical in terms of robustness. It comes equipped with the Twinlock double waterproofness system screw-down crown, which secures a water-resistance capable of reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet). All topped off by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Time is exhibited on a black lacquered dial with white hour index markers and Arabic numerals at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. The appliqué outlines of these markers, numerals and central hands are crafted out of matching Oystersteel. These central hands, numerals and index markers have also all been treated with the intense blue “Chromalight” (which was introduced with the 39mm models), for an enhanced legibility. The  brighter white hue this  luminescent manages even during daylight has made it a go to choice. Plus it features the iconic “lollipop” seconds hand circling about at center stage.
