Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990/1A
If you were excited by the return of the Nautilus in its new updated regular production, but need some more complications, then this one’s for you. Patek Philippe has released a follow up to their 2014 black version, now with this new blue and black-gradient dial. Other than that what we’ve got here is the same iconic Gérald Genta design, enhanced by a second-time zone with a very legible layout and supplemental indicators. The 40.5 mm case is made of stainless-steel with an overall vertical brushed finish. Despite all the complications packed inside it measures in at a height of only 12.53 mm. Mounted to the case is a brushed octagonal bezel with polished accents. On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a 21k gold central rotor and oscillating weight adorned with a Calatrava cross. It comes equipped with elongated rectangular shaped pushers, to operate the chronograph functions at 2 and 4 o’clock, while the pushers for local time are on the opposite side of the case. It also includes a knurled screw-down crown embossed with the calatrava cross. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 120 meters (394 feet). Time is exhibited on a blue sunburst dial with the classic horizontal ribbing, commonly found on the “Nautilus” model. This blue hue also turns into a black-gradient by the rim. Reading time is done via gold applied hour index markers, followed by a ring of white printed markers with double-digits for every 5-minute increment. This movement combines three convenient and user-friendly complications: a flyback chronograph, a Travel Time function (two time zones with two separate hour hands; the skeletonized hand shows home time) and an analog date at 12 o'clock which is synchronized with local time. The day/night indication for local time and home time appear on two small apertures. There is also a small-seconds counter at 6 o’clock. These two sub-dials break up the rectangular main dial layout motif with white outlines. The central round-edged hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility.
