Patek Philippe continues to expand its bold Cubitus collection with the introduction of its first true grand complication, the Cubitus Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5840P. First unveiled in 2024 as the brand’s first new line in decades, the Cubitus has already proven to be a polarizing yet ambitious design. With this latest release, Patek Philippe elevates the collection into haute horlogerie territory, combining a distinctive square architecture with one of watchmaking’s most revered complications.
The 45mm platinum case retains the signature Cubitus silhouette, defined by its softly curved square profile and strong architectural presence. Measuring just 10mm in thickness, it remains impressively slim for a perpetual calendar, with alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces enhancing its geometric lines and the visual interplay of light across the case.
Turning the watch over reveals a sapphire crystal caseback, offering a full view of the intricately skeletonised movement within. The transparency emphasizes the technical complexity of the calibre, while maintaining the refined finishing standards expected from Patek Philippe.
The screw-down crown ensures secure operation, while the overall construction remains clean and restrained despite the watch’s complexity. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, preserving clarity while complementing the modern aesthetic of the openworked design. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).
The dial is fully skeletonised, designed to mirror the horizontal embossed pattern associated with both the Cubitus and Nautilus collections. This openworked structure reveals the underlying movement while maintaining a strong sense of symmetry and alignment between dial and calibre, creating a cohesive and architectural visual effect.
Applied gold hour markers and baton-style hands provide clear time indication against the intricate backdrop, ensuring that legibility is preserved despite the complexity of the display. The perpetual calendar indications including day, date, month, leap year, and 24-hour display are carefully integrated into the layout, maintaining balance across the dial.
Finishing details elevate the entire composition, with a monochromatic rhodium-plated treatment applied across the movement components, including bridges, plates, and rotor. Blue accents from thermally blued screws and the Calatrava cross on the micro-rotor introduce subtle contrast, while the use of transparent sapphire elements instead of traditional ruby jewels enhances the modern aesthetic and visual depth.
