Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph 5924G
Back in 2015 we saw Patek Philippe release their “Calatrava Pilot Travel Ref. 5524” with its vintage pilot inspired design. During its initial launch not everyone was convinced, but the model eventually became a sought after collectible. Now for 2023 at Watches & Wonders this model returns in a new form with several enhancements. This is the first time that Patek Philippe has included a chronograph model in its Pilot style watch line, combined with a Travel Time function and a date indication by hand coupled with local time. The round 42 mm case is made of 18k white gold with an overall polished finish. Despite all the complications these models only measure in at a thickness of 13.05 mm. On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a winding central rotor made of 21k gold and decorated with the Calatrava cross. It comes equipped with two polished piston-style chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock with safety locks that prevent unintentionally adjusting the time, while between them is a knurled setting crown. On the left-side of the case are recessed pusheres to adjust home time in 1-hour increments, plus a recessed pusher on top of the case to adjust the date. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).Time is exhibited on either a sunburst blue-gray, or lacquered khaki green dial with applied Arabic numerals, followed by a railroad-motif minute track circling around the flange. There are two counters that cut through the main Arabic numerals: a small seconds at 6 o’clock and a date display with 3-day intervals at 12 o’clock. These counters both appear with white numerals and outlines, except for the first day of the date display which is colored red.The lower half of the dial also includes the two day/night apertures with “home time” at 3 o’clock and “local time” at 9 o’clock. These indications have maintained their original position, but due to the incorporation of a chronograph, the railway minute track had to be precision calibrated. The central sword shaped hands and applied numerals have all been fitted with a luminescent coating for an enhanced legibility. Except for a skeleton hand which indicates “home time”, while the sword-shaped hand indicates “travel time”.
