Patek Philippe Aquanaut Flyback Chronograph
One of the most luxuriously casual offerings by Patek Philippe is back with two new references and colors to choose from. We’re referring to the “Patek Philippe Aquanaut Flyback Chronograph” that was first introduced back in 1997 and saw its first chronograph movement added on in 2018. Now just a few years after the proven success of those steel versions, Patek returns with a pair of 18k white gold options.By being equipped with a chronograph function Patek’s Aquanaut became a much more viable and desirable watch, for the majority of consumers. Plus it even comes equipped with the same caliber movement found in the “Nautilus” 5980 model, which is definitely worth mentioning. The octagonal-shaped 42.2mm case is made of 18k white gold with a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases a 21k gold central rotor adorned with the Maltesse cross. So in terms of size this latest release has kept the bigger case used for the previous “Aquanaut" (Ref#: 5968A-001), released back in 2018 during Baselworld. Before that the non-chronograph versions of this timepiece came in a slightly smaller 40mm case.It comes equipped with two push-pieces to activate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown in between them with the Patek Philippe logo engraved on it. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 120 meters (393 feet). The “Aquanaut” is a very versatile watch capable of providing travel time, a time/date and also a self-winding chronograph. This is a flyback chronograph movement with a classic column wheel and vertical disk clutch that prevents a rebound of the hand in either direction whenever the chronograph is engaged. And since the clutch is virtually friction-free the chronograph hand can also be used as a continuously running second’s hand.Time is exhibited on either a blue (black-gradient) or khaki green dial, both embossed with the checkered Aquanaut pattern. It features gold-applied Arabic numerals, while circling around the dial nearing the bezel are: thick white index markers, followed by smaller white minute markers and in-between those are even smaller seconds markings. There is a sub-seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position with white Arabic numerals, index markers, and an equally white hand steadily ticking away. The central 18k white gold hour/minutes hand, Arabic numerals and the thick hour index markers have all been fitted with a green luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. A white date aperture with black numerals can also be seen at the 3 o’clock position.
