Patek Philippe 5811/1G Nautilus

When all the horology aficionados first heard that Patek Philippe would discontinue their highly esteemed 5711, many knew it would have to eventually return. Well the wait is over since Patek revealed their new “Nautilus 5811/1G-001”. At first glance it seems like the same watch, but there are several updates scattered about in subtle ways. From increasing the case by 1mm, introducing a patent-pending crown innovation, or adding a gradient effect. Attention to detail was meticulous at crafting an upgrade without disrupting a classic. The 41mm wide and 8.2mm thick case is made of 18k white gold in its iconic porthole-style design with a brushed and polished surface. It’s been updated from the previous 40mm to this slightly larger two-part case.On the flip-side we have an exhibition case back that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It showcases various gears, jewels, and a 21k yellow gold rotor, stamped by the Patek Philippe Seal.Instead of a screw-down crown, It comes equipped with an updated pull-out piece lever system, which allows the winding stem to be pulled out from the dial side. It appears nestled between the smoothly shaped crown guards that serve as integral parts of this admired design. The crown is also finely knurled and adorned by an engraving of the Calatrava cross. Water-resistance can reach up to 120 meters (393 feet). Time is exhibited on a sunburst blue dial horizontally embossed with the traditional “garage door” motif of rectangular bars running across the dial in a leveled up & down configuration, followed by gold applied hour index markers. The major update seen on the dial of the Nautilus 5811 is a gradient effect. As the central blue hue expands towards the periphery a black-gradient becomes more prominent and gradually darkens its presence as it nears the rims. The central 18k white gold hour/minutes hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a gold framed white date window at the 3 o’clock position.
