Patek Philippe 5230P-001 World Time

Back in 2016 during Baselworld marked the introduction of reference 5230, as a new legit successor to the historic Patek Philippe World Time models of the early 1930’s. It was reintroduced in two gold variations of either red or white, but has now switched alloys to return in a platinum edition with a slightly tweak dial. The round 38.5mm case is made of platinum with an overall mirror-like polished finish, while mounted by a narrow bezel that keeps its height just under 10.23mm. Other distinctive features include the winglet-style lugs that elegantly bend to smoothly accommodate a comfortable wrist fit.

On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes decorated with shiny jewels, several golden gears, and an off-center 22k gold micro-rotor with the Calatrava cross engraving.

It comes equipped with an innovative mechanism (patented back in 1999) that allows the user to simultaneously correct all the distinct World Time displays in one-hour increments, by simply pressing the pusher at 10 o’clock. All topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 30 meters (100 feet). The blue dial has a hand-applied circular guilloché pattern. Time is told with gold-applied hour index markers, followed by a series of outer rings. First off is a two-tone white and blue 24h ring, adorned with a sun (day-time) and crescent moon (night-time). Day-time is represented by blue numerals on a white background; while night-time is represented with white numerals on a blue background. As we move towards the flange there are two consecutive world timer city rings, on which can be read 24 city names corresponding to 24 time-zones. The current local time corresponds to the city name highlighted by the small red arrow at 12 o'clock, while the times of the other 23 zones are readable on the 24-hour ring that rotates counter-clockwise within the city disk. The central gold hands are composed of a pierced hour hand with a silhouette that recalls the famous “Southern Cross” constellation and the minute hand features a lozenge-shaped contour.
