Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Carbotech Blu Abisso
Go big or go home, has always seemed to be a motto over at Officine Panerai. This year at Wonders & Watches 2022 they introduced their new QuarantaQuattro collection with 44mm cases in various alloy options. Quick mention: “QuarantaQuattro” is Italian for “forty-four”. Today we’ll take a look at the Carbotech™ version, proudly made from the brand's proprietary alloy. It also marks the return of the “Blu Abisso” theme. The 44mm case is made of Carbotech™ which is one of Panerai’s proprietary alloys. It first debuted in 2015 and is composed of thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at a controlled temperature under high pressure together with a high-end polymer, PEEK (Polyether Ether Katone) that enhances its durability. On the flip-side we encounter a DLC-coated titanium screw-on dodecagonal-shaped case back, which has been engraved with Panerai’s iconic diver figure, as well as technical detailsMounted to the case is an unidirectional rotating Carbotech™ bezel with markings for the first 15 minutes in the form of a white lume, which offers a decent amount of contrast to be useful in low-light environments. It comes equipped with Panerai’s iconic crown protector with the movable latch lock lever, which is also made of DLC-coated titanium, like the caseback. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating that assists with water-resistance reaching up to 300 meters (1000 feet).Time is exhibited on a dark blue dial with dotted hour index markers and rectangular round edged hour index markers for the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. The dark blue hue is where this watch gets its “Abisso” moniker from, which means “Abyss” in Italian. It also features an improved date window at 3 o’clock, that now provides a better framing to enhance the user’s glance view. While at 9 o’clock we can find a sub-seconds counter running along.Overall this is the same sturdy and highly reliable case design we expect from Panerai. The QuarantaQuattro collection is more about a new size option, than any major modifications. Also worth noting on the lower-half instead of AUTOMATIC, they’ve placed Carbotech™, in order to highlight the use of their proprietary alloy. The semi-hollow central hour and minute hands, plus all the hour index markers have been fitted with a white luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
