Panerai Marina PAM01117 & PAM01118
Well it seems like someone has “hit the lights” over at Officine Panerai. We’re referring to their latest “Luminor Marina” models PAM 1117 and PAM 1118. Two limited edition pieces that are yet to prove successful, but will be hard not to spot with all their extra shinny glow-in-the-dark lume. Luminescent characteristics that even extend to its accompanying patent strap. No doubt an innovative watch that also has the particularity of an extended 70-year warranty. Let’s take a closer look at these new innovative releases, unveiled at the first online edition of “Wonders & Watches”.
Both watches come in a 44mm case, with Panerai’s patented crown guard and a solid screw-on case back that has been engraved with the inscription “70 YEARS”. The seventy here is meant to highlight the aforementioned extended warranty, Panerai has attributed to these particular timepieces. Many would argue that if a watch is well taken care of it should last a lifetime. But, even so the warranty can’t hurt and reveals just how confident the brand is in their proprietary materials.
The models do vary in their chosen alloy: PAM 1117 has been crafted out of titanium and undergone a micro-blasting process. It was also produced with a special technology called DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Melting). This is a 3D printing technique based on the sintering of titanium powder with a high power density optical fiber laser.
While PAM 118 has been made out of Panerai’s patented Carbotech™ material, which is a special carbon composite produced with thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at high pressure with a high-end polymer (PEEK), which binds the composite material enhancing its strengthen and durability.
Finally both models are topped by a sapphire crystal and water-resistance on these timepieces can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue sun-brushed dial (PAM 1117) or black sun-brushed dial (PAM 1118), both with hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12. It also includes a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position and a sub-seconds aligned with 9 o’clock.
The central hands, sub-dial and all the hour index markers, plus numerals have undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
This tends to be a standard feature, but for these editions Panerai has extended the “glow” to the circumference of the dial, as well as the outer contours of the crown guard, its safety handle, and the straps stitching. Features that will undoubtedly make this watch hard not to spot in dim-lit crowds, or pitch dark spaces.
