Panerai adds a bold new chapter to its flagship Luminor Marina collection with the introduction of the PAM01678, the first model in the line to feature a bronze case. Unveiled following the 2025 refresh of the Luminor Marina in steel and titanium, this new edition extends the collection’s modernised proportions and upgraded movement architecture to one of the brand’s most iconic materials. For a manufacturer that helped usher bronze into contemporary watchmaking with its now-legendary 2011 Submersible, the move feels both overdue and inevitable. The new Bronzo combines the evolving patina of bronze with refined case ergonomics and a matte blue gradient dial, creating a modern diver’s watch steeped in Panerai tradition.
The PAM01678 features a bold 44mm case crafted from Panerai’s proprietary bronze alloy, composed of pure copper and tin. The entire exterior is brushed, giving the metal a warm, utilitarian texture that will gradually develop a unique patina over time, which is a hallmark of bronze and a nod to the brand’s maritime legacy. With its revised proportions, the case wears slightly slimmer than previous Luminor models, measuring just 13.7mm thick while preserving the model’s commanding presence on the wrist.
The caseback is executed in titanium to avoid direct skin contact with bronze, ensuring better hypoallergenic comfort and long-term wearability. A sapphire crystal window set into the titanium ring provides a clear view of the in-house automatic calibre P.980, while etched inscriptions and serial details are neatly engraved around the perimeter.
It comes equipped with Panerai’s patented crown-protecting bridge, a signature element of the Luminor design, rendered here in matching bronze. A cam lever locks the crown securely in place, helping achieve a water-resistance that can reach up to 500 meters (1,640 feet), making the PAM01678 not just visually rugged but functionally ready for serious diving applications.
The dial of the PAM01678 is executed in a gradient matte blue, evoking the deepening tones of the ocean, a fitting choice given the watch’s nautical inspiration. The hue transitions from a lighter center to a darker periphery, providing depth and subtle dynamism without disrupting the minimalist layout. This interplay of color complements the warm bronze case, creating a visually striking contrast rooted in the aesthetics of aged seafaring instruments.
True to Panerai tradition, the display features a sandwich construction: the upper dial plate is laser-cut with bold Arabic numerals and hour markers at the cardinal positions, allowing the luminous material on the lower plate to shine through. A small seconds sub-dial is neatly positioned at 9 o’clock, balancing the brand’s signature symmetry. The dial omits a date window, reinforcing the clean, historically faithful layout of early Luminor models.
The hands and cutout markers are filled with beige Super-LumiNova, offering a vintage-toned glow in low-light conditions. This not only enhances nighttime visibility but also ties the visual language of the dial to the aged bronze tones of the case, a unified aesthetic that speaks to both heritage and function.
Panerai Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678
The “Officine Panerai Luminor Marina Bronzo” (Ref#: PAM01678) is powered by the in-house automatic mechanical movement, caliber P.980 with 23 jewels, 177 components, 12 ½ lignes, and a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz). It features a traversing balance bridge for added stability, an Incabloc anti-shock system, and a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. Power reserve can last up to 72 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted on this watch is a deep blue calfskin leather strap with beige contrast stitching, secured by a trapezoidal pin buckle in matching brushed bronze. It complements the marine character of the dial while echoing the warm tones of the case. An additional blue rubber strap is also included, offering a sportier, water-friendly option for active use. Together, the two straps make the PAM01678 adaptable for both daily wear and rugged aquatic environments.
