Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante

Once again the Oris brand has embraced an environmental cause, while presenting us with a new edition to their “Big Crown” collection. To kick off 2022 Oris has partnered with the sustainable leather brand Cervo Volante, as a means to bring awareness towards the effort in Switzerland to control the wild red deer population and protect the country’s forest ecosystems.This initiative led to the new “Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante” by combining the “Big Crown Pointer Date” design with sustainable deer leather straps harvested from the annual sanctioned culling of the Swiss red deer population.The 38mm multi-piece case is made of stainless-steel with a brushed finish. Mounted to the case is a stainless-steel coin-edge knurled bezel, reminiscent of certain vintage pilot watches. On the flip-side is an exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The screw on portion resembles the same coin-edge bezel seen on the frontal side. In the interior we get a glimpse of purple jewels, blued screws, and the brand’s signature red winding rotor.It comes equipped with a screw-down oversized XL crown, hence the name “Big Crown”. Although this is a more compact version of the larger 40mm case, Oris has preserved most of its trademark features, including the sturdy tapering lugs. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Dialwise we’re presented with either a blue, gray, or green hue dial. All these options are inspired by the natural landscapes of the Swiss Alps. The green easily evokes the forest, while gray recalls mountain views, and blue leads our imaginary gaze to the clear skies.Time is told with applied Arabic numerals, followed by a white railroad motif minute index grid. While circling around the flange nearing the bezel is a series of Arabic numerals circling the dial as a calendar, which is pointed out by a thin hand with a red or green tip (depending on your chosen option), adequately highlighting it apart from all the other elements. Its central cathedral-style hands are an elegant touch that can be traced back to some of the brand’s vintage aviator watches. Plus the central hands and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating with a fauxtina lume, for a vintage look and enhanced legibility.

The “Oris Big Crown X Cervo Volante” (References below) is powered by the self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 754 with 26 jewels and 28,800 vph. This movement is based on the original SW 200-1 caliber, although further enhanced. Power reserve on this timepiece can last up to 38 hours, when fully wound.Mounted on these watches are different tones of textured deer leather straps by Cervo Volante, secured to the wrist by a steel pin buckle.
