The Big Crown Pointer Date is one of the longest-running and most recognizable watches in Oris’s catalogue. Originally introduced in 1938 as a pilot’s watch, it became known for its oversized crown and distinctive pointer-date display, features that remain central to the model today. The latest limited edition celebrates one of baseball’s greatest legends, Lou Gehrig. Produced in a run of 2,130 pieces, the watch honours the New York Yankees icon while supporting the Lou and Eleanor Gehrig Family Foundation and its efforts to fund ALS research.

The Oris Lou Gehrig Limited Edition is based on the familiar Big Crown Pointer Date platform. Its stainless steel case measures 40mm in diameter, 12.2mm in thickness and 48.2mm lug-to-lug. The proportions remain versatile and faithful to the collection’s vintage-inspired character, while the combination of brushed and polished surfaces adds a touch of refinement.

A domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while the rear of the watch is fitted with a screwed steel caseback. Water resistance is rated at 50 metres, making it suitable for everyday wear while maintaining the heritage-oriented nature of the design.
The oversized screw-in crown and signature fluted bezel remain key elements of the Big Crown identity. Exclusive to this edition, the caseback is engraved with an image of Lou Gehrig delivering his famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium in 1939. The limited production of 2,130 pieces directly references his remarkable record of 2,130 consecutive games played.

The dial draws inspiration from the colours associated with the New York Yankees. Its vertically brushed silver surface recalls the grey tones of the team’s road uniforms while also subtly referencing Gehrig’s legendary nickname, “The Iron Horse.”
Applied Arabic numerals and hour markers are outlined in blue and filled with white Super-LumiNova. The blue minute track further reinforces the baseball theme, creating a strong visual contrast against the silver background. A black peripheral date scale surrounds the dial, with the signature pointer-date hand indicating the date via a blue-tipped arrow.

Several details pay tribute directly to Gehrig’s career. Most notable is the number 4 on the date track, rendered in blue to honour the number he wore throughout his career with the Yankees.

Cathedral-style hands, another hallmark of the Big Crown Pointer Date collection, are filled with Super-LumiNova and provide excellent legibility while enhancing the watch’s vintage appeal.
