Oris Big Crown Father Time Limited Edition
In 2022, Oris established a unique partnership with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), marking the first time the prestigious club collaborated with a watch brand. Despite cricket being a complex and often slow-paced sport, Oris became the official timekeeper for MCC. To celebrate this three-year alliance, Oris and MCC jointly designed a special edition of the Big Crown Pointer Date watch, made of bronze. Named "Father Time" in homage to the iconic weathervane atop the clocktower at Lord’s Cricket Ground, the chosen timepiece is also a significant part of Oris's history. Encased in a 40mm bronze case with a matching bracelet, the Oris Father Time is a limited edition of 1,926 pieces, symbolizing the year the weathervane was gifted to Lord’s Cricket Ground.Father Time, the weathervane at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, is a mythical figure that symbolizes the passage of time. Donated in 1926 by architect Sir Herbert Baker as a gesture of apology for the delayed completion of the Second Grand Stand at Lord’s, Father Time is a life-size cast iron figure revered by cricket enthusiasts globally. The figure on the weathervane depicts a cloaked, bearded man holding a gold scythe over his shoulder, removing the bails from a wicket. Many connect his significance to Law 12.3 of the Laws of Cricket, which dictates the removal of bails from both wickets after the call of Time, indicating the end of the day’s match. As the official timekeeper at Lord’s Cricket Ground, Oris has the privilege of displaying its logo on the clocktower of the Mound Stand beneath the Father Time weathervane. The 40mm multi-piece case is made of bronze with an overall brushed finish, while mounted to the case is a fluted coin-edge bronze bezel. This style is reminiscent of vintage pilot watches, particularly those with a distinctive feature known as the "Big Crown Pointer."
On the flip-side is a sealed steel caseback engraved with the image of “Father Time”. Additionally, each of these historically inspired timepieces comes inscribed with its distinctive limited edition number.
It comes equipped with its signature screw-down security “big crown”, embossed by the Oris logo. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal on both sides with an anti-reflective coating inside. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a white dial with black painted Arabic numerals, followed by a railroad motif minute index grid. This is an American color scheme of red, white, and blue to celebrate one of the country's major pastimes in sports. Surrounding the outer edge is a calendar ring, distinguished by a slender hand with a red crescent-shaped tip, effectively drawing attention to it among the various indicators. The central hands, designed in a vintage aviator style reminiscent of cathedral architecture, and the Arabic numerals have both been treated with a luminescent coating, improving their visibility in low-light conditions.
