Oris Aquis Date New York Harbor Limited Edition
Oris has truly embraced social awareness by engaging in several environmental projects under their “Change for the Better” initiative. The topic of water has been a top priority that Oris has tried to resolve by cleaning up the world’s lakes and rivers, whale and dolphin conservatism, or saving coral reefs. Their latest endeavor involves collaborating with the Billion Oyster Project to help clean up the New York Harbor. To mark the occasion they’ve released the new Oris Aquis Date New York Harbor Limited Edition. The 41.5mm multi-piece case is made of stainless-steel with brushed casebands and polished accents. Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel with stainless-steel insert. It has been engraved with a 60-minute diving scale in relief to assist divers with immersion times; although it can be easily used for other practical countdowns. On the flip-side is a sealed caseback with a relief engraving of three oysters. This is a direct reference to the “Billion Oyster Project” which has contributed to the NY Harbor being cleaner today than it’s been in the last 110 years. The unique limited number of each timepiece has also been inscribed on the steel back.We need to remember that oysters are natural water filters capable of filtering up to 189 liters of water per day. This organization was founded in 2014 by Murry Fisher and Pete Malinowksi, who have worked closely with young students, volunteers and restaurant partners to improve the water quality. This effort has led the Billion Oyster Project to introduce over 75 million juvenile oysters into 18 restoration sites that are now self-sustaining.It comes equipped with a stainless-steel screw-in crown that is protected by screwed on crown guards. Topped by a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet). Time is exhibited on a green mother-of-pearl dial with stainless-steel applied hour index markers, followed by smaller white printed minute index markers circling around its periphery. Due to the natural opalescence found in the mother-of-pearl material, as light reflects on it we can see various shifts in hue throughout the dial. This was a great choice to mimic the Harbor’s green water and add an extra layer of uniqueness. The central stainless-steel hands, the hour index markers and the circle found on the lollipop-style seconds hand, have all been fitted with a luminescent coating for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date aperture located at the 6 o’clock position.
