Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary
Half a century has rolled by since the “Omega Speedmaster” was awarded by NASA with the “Snoopy Award” for its essential role of assisting the Apollo 13 crew’s historic voyage in 1970. To celebrate these 50 years, Omega is now launching an astonishing timepiece, totally worthy of representing this milestone event. It not only delivers in technical proficiency, as it also captivates our imagination by including an actual animated Snoopy a midst outer space. Time to suit up and explore the newly released “Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary”.The Silver Snoopy Award was created by NASA to honor those that contribute to outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success. After the Apollo 1 fire, NASA had to rebuild their tarnished Apollo programs image. So, when Charles Schulz an avid supporter of the U.S. space program was approached to allow Snoopy to be their safety mascot. He not only agreed to allow Snoopy become an astronaut, but he did it at no cost, assuming a patriotic stance. Schulz also drew the image for the award pin, as well as promotional art to promote the award program.
The 42mm polished-brushed stainless steel case has been professionally crafted to be asymmetrical. Mounted to the watch is a blue ceramic bezel ring with a white enamel tachymeter scale
A very unique and visually pleasing feature of this watch is actually hidden away on the flip-side. Instead of an exhibition case back, the sapphire crystal has been decorated by a series of moving elements that create an active animation. As the chronograph seconds circulates on the front-end, on the back-end its leading a spaceship with Snoopy around the dark side of the moon, just like the Apollo 13 crew did. Plus the small seconds hands is linked to a disc that rotates Earth once per minute, thus symbolizing the precise rotation of Earth. The lunar surface was decorated on the sapphire crystal by a unique micro-structured metallisation, which provides a beautiful backdrop to this well-thought animation. It also features an inscription of the iconic quote “Eyes on the Stars”, written in the outer space sky.Omega’s patent NAIAD LOCK case back, secures all these engravings in the correct, upright position. It comes equipped two push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions, with a setting-crown placed between them. All cover by a domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 50 meters (167 feet). Time is exhibited on a white dial with blue varnished top cavity index markers, while circling around in the back ground is a ring of black printed minute/seconds markings. There are three blue sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and 12 hour counter both with white hands; and a second’s sub-dial with a blue hand circling around a cosmonaut Snoopy.
In a way the most visually appealing of this watch are tucked away on the case back, while the most visible dial side maintains a classic and proven layout. The central blue varnished hands and tips of the hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
