In one of the most striking evolutions of the Dark Side of the Moon lineup, Omega pays tribute once again to the legendary Apollo 8 mission with a moody and sophisticated monochrome take on lunar exploration. Officially titled the “Grey Side of the Moon,” this model pairs a fully skeletonized movement with a new tone-on-tone aesthetic based on astronaut Jim Lovell’s words: “The moon is essentially grey.” While previous Apollo 8 variants leaned heavily on yellow accents and high contrast, this edition opts for cohesion and restraint, showcasing Omega’s technical mastery in ceramic and laser engraving.
The case measures 44.25mm in diameter, with a slimmed-down thickness of just 12.97mm and a lug-to-lug span of 50mm. Machined entirely from grey ceramic, the structure retains the classic Speedmaster Professional silhouette, now updated with a satin-brushed finish that adds dimensionality to the dark tone. A matching ceramic tachymeter bezel is engraved and filled in a lighter shade for subtle legibility, maintaining the all-grey theme across its outer surfaces.Around the back, a sapphire display window offers a dramatic view of the decorated movement within, showcasing the lunar-surface texture that has become synonymous with Omega’s Apollo 8 models. The periphery of the grey ceramic caseback is engraved with technical specs, while the glass itself is clean, allowing full appreciation of the movement’s layered visual language, including one final engraving of Lovell’s now-iconic quote.
Flanking the case are a grey ceramic crown and pushers, integrated cleanly into the rounded mid-case form. A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (165 feet).
At the front, the laser-ablated skeleton dial reveals the multi-layered movement structure, meticulously finished to mimic the cratered surface of the moon. This high-precision engraving technique creates light and shadow effects that shift under different viewing angles, reinforcing the lunar inspiration. Visible beneath the mainplate are the gear train and chronograph levers, framed by sculpted bridges with fine detailing and angular contours.Time is indicated by polished baton hour and minute hands, paired with a slender central chronograph seconds hand, all in a rhodium finish for clean legibility. The subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock provide a balanced display of the chronograph and running seconds. Contrasts are kept subtle but deliberate, with matte and brushed textures helping distinguish different elements despite the uniform color palette.
Visually striking and technically ambitious, this model exemplifies Omega’s commitment to storytelling through design, merging space heritage with cutting-edge materials and surface treatment.
