Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8
Continuing the legacy of its 2018 Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 chronograph, Omega introduces an upgraded variant that enhances the original's design with more intricate detailing and sophistication. This latest model, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, honors the historic Apollo 8 mission, noted for being humanity's first lunar orbit. Reflecting the renewed global fascination with space exploration, spurred by the recent billionaire-led space ventures, Omega's new release is a sophisticated evolution of the previous model (Ref#: 311.92.44.30.01.001). It celebrates the pioneering Apollo 8 journey with a moon-themed dial and caseback, symbolizing the mission's remarkable achievement. The 44.25 mm asymmetrical case is made of black Zr02 ceramic with a mix of brushed surfaces and polished accents. Mounted to the case is a fixed black ceramic bezel with laser-engraved tachymeter scale filled with white “grand feu” enamel. It measures in at 50mm from lug-to-lug and 13mm in terms of thickness. On the flipside is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It features a blackened main plate and bridges with moon-relief texture.Compared to the previous caliber 1869, this version has a greater lunar detail thanks to defined laser engraving and contrasting surfaces. Engraved along the ceramic portion we can read “APOLLO 8, DEC 1968”, “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON”, “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE”, and "CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER".It comes equipped with two piston-style pushers to operate the chronograph functions with a knurled setting-crown in-between them and embossed with the Omega logo. All topped by a box-shaped scratch resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to 50 meters (167 feet).Time is exhibited on a skeletonized black anodized aluminum dial with applied markers embedded with yellow accents, while circling around the flange are a series of gray printed minutes/seconds markings, known as the racing style minute-track. The majority of the dial is permeated with a laser-ablated Moon texture that imbues this model with immense character and attention to detail. There are two snailed sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. But, the true artistry is the small seconds with a Moon texture background and a Saturn V in titanium as the hand. The minor seconds indicator, currently awaiting patent approval, features a hand crafted from grade 5 titanium, designed to resemble the iconic Saturn V rocket. This three-dimensional form is achieved through precision laser turning, and its coloring is a result of a combination of white varnishing, material ablation, and laser-induced blackening. The two snailed counters have yellow hands, just like the varnished chronograph hand, which all match the hue on the applied hour markers. The blackened central sword-shaped hours and minutes hands and applied indices have all been filled with a green Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility.
