Omega Speedmaster ‘57 Master Chronometer Chronograph
When we hear the word “Speedmaster” we tend to immediately think of the Moonwatch, but in the Omega universe “Speedmaster” refers to a collection with several distinct series. One of those is the Speedmaster '57 which is celebrating its 65th anniversary with a complete revamp. We’re talking about changes that extend from the case proportions to the movement. This stainless-steel case now has a slimmer profile that measures in at a diameter of 40.5mm and a height of 12.99mm with a polished surface and brushed caseband finish. While mounted to the case is a fixed steel bezel with a laser-engraved and laser-colored tachymeter scale, which includes the DON (dot-over-ninety). On the flip-side is a sapphire exhibition caseback that allows a view into the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The movement has been decorated with the arabesque Geneva waves, which span out from the balance wheel, instead of the more conventional pattern that usually starts at the center. It comes equipped with a screw-in crown and two piston-shaped pushers to operate the chronograph functions. All topped by a box style sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 50 meters (167 feet).Time is exhibited on either a black (sand-blasted sandwich), dark blue, burgundy, or dark green dial; all with a sun-ray finish and steel applied index markers. This is a very vintage inspired design which almost makes it seem familiar, despite all the new modifications. It features a bi-compax layout that includes two sub-dials with a sloped circumference: a 12-hour counter at 3 o’clock and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central broad arrow style hands and applied hour index markers have all been fitted with a Super-LumiNova filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date window at the bottom 6 o’clock position.
