Among the seven references in Omega’s newly updated Speedmaster 38mm collection, the black no-date Ref. 324.30.38.50.01.002 makes the clearest connection to the legendary Moonwatch. Its combination of a compact case, automatic movement, monochromatic dial and absence of a date also recalls the philosophy behind the original Speedmaster Reduced of 1988, once again offering the familiar character of Omega’s most famous chronograph in a smaller and more convenient self-winding format.

The Omega Speedmaster 38mm Black No-Date features a stainless-steel case measuring 38mm across, 14.75mm thick and a compact 44.96mm from lug to lug. Its asymmetrical construction, lyre-shaped twisted lugs and partially protected chronograph controls maintain the unmistakable Speedmaster profile. Framing the watch is a polished bezel with a black aluminum tachymeter insert, complete with the vintage-inspired “Dot Over Ninety” detail associated with historic and contemporary Moonwatch references.

Instead of displaying the movement, the screw-in stainless-steel caseback continues another familiar Speedmaster tradition with a stamped Seahorse medallion at its center. The solid construction keeps the self-winding caliber 3332 hidden within, emphasizing the functional character of this particular reference rather than turning the movement into an external decorative element.

The crown is flanked by the chronograph pushers, with the three controls aligned along the same horizontal plane thanks to the integrated automatic chronograph architecture. Above, a box-shaped scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides provides modern protection while retaining a profile influenced by vintage Speedmasters. Water-resistance can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

A matte-finished black varnished dial gives this reference the most overtly Moonwatch-inspired appearance of the refreshed Speedmaster 38mm family. The removal of the date aperture is particularly important, leaving an uninterrupted three-register chronograph layout, while the oval counters used by the previous generation have given way to conventional round subdials. Omega has also reduced the amount of dial text, resulting in a cleaner and more purpose-driven presentation.

The display relies on white-painted hands and printed hour markers for contrast, with three circular registers handling the running seconds and chronograph indications. Because of the reduced 38mm diameter, the counters naturally sit closer to the perimeter than those of the 42mm Moonwatch, yet their shape and the simplified black-and-white treatment establish a much stronger visual relationship between the two watches.

White Super-LumiNova appears on the hour and minute hands, chronograph seconds hand and hour markers, maintaining clear nighttime visibility against the matte black background. Combined with the traditional black tachymeter bezel, these luminous elements preserve the straightforward instrument-watch aesthetic that separates this model from the more colorful and luxurious interpretations elsewhere in the new Speedmaster 38mm range.

Omega Speedmaster 38mm Black
The “Omega Speedmaster 38mm Black” (Ref#: 324.30.38.50.01.002) is powered by the self-winding in-house mechanical movement, caliber 3332 with 31 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with an integrated column-wheel chronograph, Co-Axial escapement, free-sprung balance with Si14 silicon balance spring, small seconds, central chronograph seconds, and 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters, while carrying COSC chronometer certification. Power reserve can last up to 52 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted on this watch is a stainless-steel five-link bracelet derived from the contemporary Moonwatch design, combining three broader brushed rows with two narrower polished links.

A folding clasp incorporates Omega’s comfort release adjustment system, offering two positions across 2.3mm of adjustment.

Together with the restrained 38mm diameter and 44.96mm lug-to-lug length, the bracelet helps realize the same fundamental proposition once offered by the Speedmaster Reduced. Hence a recognizable Speedmaster design in a package that can accommodate a wider variety of wrist sizes.
