After some delay due to the global pandemic the wait is finally over! The much anticipated next generation “Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch” has arrived. Options abound with 8 available variants that have managed to ingeniously blend vintage elements and a modern caliber movement. It also comes equipped with caliber 3861 and a redesigned bracelet, plus a few other well thought out enhancements. All models come in a 42mm case but among the various options are a few major distinctions. In terms of what has remained these upgraded Moon-watches have preserved the lyre-type lugs with its combination of brushed and polished finishes, and a subtle protection for the crown and pushers.
The entry-level model can be had in stainless-steel with either a: hestalite crystal and a solid case back, or a sapphire crystal with a sapphire exhibition case back that allows to view the inner workings of the new mechanical movement.Engraved on the solid case back of the hestalite model is the classic inscription “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON” and it has also added “FLIGHT QUALIFIED BY NASA IN 1965 FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS”. Mounted to the watches is an anodized aluminum bezel with a black tachymeter scale, which features the vintage style “dot over 90”, also known as “DON” and a dot diagonal to 70. Water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a matte black grained stepped dial (inspired by the Speedmaster ref# ST 105.012) reminiscent of this models 1960’s versions. Omega has also tried to keep this dial similar to its original inspiration by including an applied Ω logo and the old vintage font for the “Speedmaster” inscription. There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position; and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. It also features a “teardrop” style chronograph hand with a pointed base. The new Moonwatch is also available in two gold models: Canopus (white) and Sedna (rose), which are both proprietary alloys to Omega. These share the same 42mm dimensions of the steel editions, but have been further enhanced with applied gold hour index markers on the dial. The Sedna rose gold version also differs by having all its markings, sub-dials, logos in a gold hue that contrastes nicely with the overall black background. While the Canopus white gold version is the only one without a black dial, instead it has opted for a silver dial with a radially-brushed finish that further differentiates it from the flat, matte finish seen on the gold and steel models.
