Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M iN Summer Blue
As part of the Seamaster 75th anniversary collection, Omega has also unveiled a dedicated version of one of its most iconic dive watches, the Ploprof. This timepiece is characterized by its oversized dimensions, distinctive asymmetrical shape, enormous crown guard, and unique crown placement. All these traits make it immediately recognizable, plus an essential tool for professional divers. It differs from previous versions in terms of case size and by bearing the enchanting “Summer Blue” dial, as seen across the whole collection. Let’s get acquainted with a new generation of the Omega Seamaster Ploprof.A quick history lesson can recall that the inception of the Ploprof is intertwined with the evolution of deep-sea saturation diving, a response to the late 1950s' demands from various industries like offshore oil and gas exploration, scientific research, and underwater construction, such as welding or inspection. This unique diving technique empowered professionals to undertake complex and time-consuming tasks at extreme depths, which until then had been an impossibility using conventional diving methods. The process required divers to live within a pressurized habitat, breathing carefully concocted gas mixtures (including helium, oxygen, and, at times, nitrogen) to saturate their blood and tissues. This innovative approach allowed divers to navigate and work at depths that were previously inaccessible, which then required an appropriate timepiece. The distinctively shaped case measures in at 55mm x 45mm, which means its profile was slimmed down from the previous 48mm version. It has been crafted out of a solid monobloc metal, made from the proprietary O-MEGASTEEL, which surpasses 316L steel in hardness by an impressive 40 percent to 50 percent. Furthermore, it presents a yield rating that outperforms conventional stainless steel, showcasing more than double the capacity to endure stress before undergoing permanent deformation. All qualities that can be fully appreciated by deep divers. On the flip-side despite its different shape, it still features the same stamped commemorative Seamaster logo depicting a trident-bearing Poseidon and two seahorses, as all the watches on the “Summer Blue” collection. This was OMEGA’s 1956 original design which the brand has currently reinstated.Mounted to the case is a bi-directional rotating bezel with sapphire insert engraved with a 60-minute scale. It sits perfectly framed among this monobloc which carries historical significance linked back to 1970’s. It comes equipped with a knurled screw-in crown with a larger crown guard on the (less common) left-side of the case, while an ingenious helium relief valve is located on the top right corner of this unusually shaped case. All topped by a domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance can reach up to an astonishing 1200 meters (4000 feet).Time is told on Omega’s “summer blue” color with light-blue hour index markers, followed by a minute track ring of thinner markers. Although this collection all have in common the same hue, in fact the tones of blue vary throughout the models. Since the “Ploprof” has a higher water-resistance its blue hue is darker comparatively to the other model options. The rhodium-plated central hands, hour index markers and Arabic numerals on the bezel have all been fitted with a unique light blue Super-LumiNova coating, for an enhanced legibility. Except for the central minute hand and dotted triangle on the bezel, which both shine in green.
