Officine Panerai Mediterraneo

Once again we’re greeted with vibrant shades of blue by Officine Panerai. Their latest offering is a pair of Radiomir timepieces with differing alloy, as well as available in a hand-wound or automatic option. These models have been dubbed “Mediterraneo”, which is Italian for “Mediterranean”. The sea that surrounds the countries of southern Europe and can now possibly travel on your wrist, if you so desire.

This new pair of Panerai watches are available in either a 42mm polished steel (PAM 1144) or 45mm brushed titanium case (PAM 1078).

On the flip-side we encounter both with a transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movements and has been decorated with an etched wave-motif.

Mounted to the case is a bezel matching each models primary alloy, while this version of the Radiomir comes with thick protruding lugs (instead of their more iconic wire-style lugs).

It also comes equipped with a small setting-crown, which has been engraved with the Panerai logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal. Water-resistance on these timepieces can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a “satiné soleil decoration” (which is French for “sunburst”) blue dial with beige numerals and the Arabic numerals 6 and 12. These elements are all peeking from underneath the iconic Panerai “sandwich dial”. There is also a sub-seconds dial aligned with the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock spot.

There are only two subtle differences between these dails: PAM 1144 has steel toned hands, while the larger PAM 1078 has gold toned central hands and “Automatic” inscribed on the lower-half of its dial. The central hands, as well as the sub-seconds hand, hour index markers and Arabic numerals on both models have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
