For those craving “platinum status” and “climbing the charts” momentum, rest assured for Officine Panerai has come to fill the void. After a series of releases that focused on lightweight alloys and innovative composites, this time around Panerai has opted to launch the limited edition “Luminor Marina Platinumtech™” with a classical heft and warm color-scheme.The 44mm case is made of a trademarked platinum designated as Platinumtech™, which is a new in-house alloy that offers superior robustness compared to traditional alloys. This iconic cushion case has a polished finish and its characteristic short narrow lugs for a comfortable wrist fit.On the flip-side is an exhibition case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement, although much of the caliber is partially covered by a “70 YEARS” warranty logo.Mounted to the case is a polished Platinumtech™ bezel with an equally smooth polished finish, which offers an integrated cohesive look to the overall case design. It also includes the iconic Luminor Marina crown protection with the locking gear lever that secures the setting-crown in place. This part of the case has been given a brushed finish, which contrasts nicely with the overall polished look. All topped by a sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance reaching up to 50 meters (164 feet).Time is exhibited on a green sun-brushed dial with rectangular hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12. These elements are seen as cut-aways on Panerai’s iconic “sandwich” structured dial. There is also a sub-seconds dial aligned with the 9 o’clock position and a small date aperture at the 3 o’clock spot. The blued central hands, as well as the sub-seconds hand, hour index markers and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating that emits a green glow, for an enhanced legibility.Although a green dial is nothing new for Panerai or the Luminor collection, these blue touches are indeed an unfamiliar color combination. It seems to not have garnered a mass appeal, but from our view point it seems a refreshing take at best or innocuous choice, given its subtle integration.
