Officine Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech™ PAM 1663
For those that would prefer to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the “Luminor Marina” by Officine Panerai, without all the extra added lights, you’re in luck. Besides the recently reviewed pair of “glow-in-the-dark” models, Panerai has also released this sturdy “Fibratech™”, crafted out of a totally new eco-friendly alloy.
In accordance with other recent releases this timepiece also comes in a 44m case, but the true novelty resides in marking the introduction of a new proprietary alloy in the Panerai catalogue: “Fibratech™”.
In essence Fibratech™ is a material obtained with natural and eco-sustainable raw fibers. It is 60% lighter that steel and offers remarkable physical and mechanical properties. Similar to Carbotech™ it is also highly resistant to corrosion and offers increased longevity. Once again the expertise and craftsmanship of the Panerai Laboratorio de Idee are well evidenced, by being the first to use such a material in the horology industry.
Mounted to the case is a Carbotech™ bezel, which is a previous Panerai creation made of a special carbon composite produced with thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at high pressure with a high-end polymer (PEEK), which binds the composite material enhancing its strengthen and durability. Another added benefit of this alloy is its ultra-light weight quality.
On the flip-side is a solid screwed-on sandblasted titanium case back, which sums up to a total of three distinct alloys applied in the production of this unique timepiece. All topped by a sapphire crystal, water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a shaded blue dial with hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12. There is also a gradient effect applied to the blue hue throughout the dial, which combined with the iconic Panerai sandwich-style layering of the dials markings, add an extra depth to its overall look. It also includes a sub-seconds aligned with the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock spot. The central hands, sub-seconds, index markers and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
