Officine Panerai Luminor Marina DMLS Titanium PAM 1662
A main highlight of the recent releases by Officine Panerai, at this inaugural online Watches & Wonders trade fair, have been their innovative materials. The R&D department known as “Laboratorio di Idee”, in activity since 1860, have once again showcased their expertise with these combinations of distinct alloys. Today we’ll focus on the new “Luminor Marina“ PAM 1662.
The 44mm case is made out of their proprietary DMLS titanium. This special technology known as DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Melting) is a 3D printing technique based on the sintering of titanium powder with a high power density optical fiber laser. For further robustness it also comes equipped Panerai’s patented and highly-recognizable crown guard.
Similarly to the previously released PAM01663, mounted to the case is a Carbotech™ bezel. This alloy is a previous patented Panerai creation made of a special carbon composite produced with thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at high pressure with a high-end polymer (PEEK), which binds the composite material enhancing its strengthen and durability. Among other added benefits of this alloy, its ultra-light weight quality is a celebrated enhancement.
On the flip-side is a solid screwed-on titanium case back, which sums up a total of two distinct alloys applied in the production of this worthy timepiece. All topped by a sapphire crystal, water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on an anthracite dial with hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12. The iconic Panerai sandwich-style layering of the dials markings are present on this release, adding an extra depth to its overall look.
It also includes a sub-seconds aligned with the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock spot.
The central hands, sub-seconds, index markers and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
