While much attention in recent years has gone to Longines’ vintage-inspired Spirit and Heritage collections, the Master Collection remains one of the brand’s best-selling series, offering traditionally styled pieces with useful complications. For 2025, in quiet celebration of the line’s 20th anniversary, Longines has introduced its most luxurious version yet: the Master Chronograph Moonphase in solid rose gold. This refined timepiece builds upon the longstanding appeal of the collection while delivering impressive mechanical pedigree under its traditional dress.
The case of the new Longines Master Chronograph Moonphase is made entirely of 18k rose gold, polished throughout to highlight its formal character. With a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 14.40mm, the watch is assertive but proportionally balanced. Its domed bezel and harmonious curves ensure that, despite its size, it wears elegantly on the wrist. Lug-to-lug it stretches 49.5mm, which adds presence while remaining within traditional limits for a modern dress chronograph.
Flipping the watch over reveals a snap-on 18k gold caseback fitted with a sapphire display window, offering a clear view of the automatic chronograph movement inside. This classic caseback design underscores the watch’s roots in traditional Swiss watchmaking, where elegance and mechanics quietly coexist.
Crowning the case is a rose gold push-pull crown, flanked by polished oval pushers that control the column-wheel chronograph. Water-resistance can reach up to 30 meters (100 feet), sufficient for daily wear but clearly oriented toward land-bound refinement rather than sport.
Executed in a silvery-white tone, the dial features a richly detailed barleycorn guilloché pattern, embossed to reflect light and texture. A trio of sub-dials is arranged in a classic layout: 30-minute chronograph and calendar windows at 12 o’clock, small seconds and a 24-hour indicator at 9 o’clock, and a moonphase plus 12-hour totalizer at 6. A fine minute track surrounds the dial on an angled flange, while the central date is indicated by a blued crescent-tipped hand.
All central hands: hour, minute, date, and chronograph seconds, are rendered in blued steel with an elegant leaf shape. The numerals are printed in classic black Arabic style, maintaining optimal legibility despite the dial’s complexity.
The moonphase display, calendar layout, and 24-hour indicator transform the watch into a complete calendar chronograph, and while the abundance of functions slightly diminishes immediate legibility, it amplifies its mechanical charm, evoking mid-century dashboard chronographs and classic calendar watches.
Longines Master Chronograph Moonphase
The “Longines Master Chronograph Moonphase“ (Ref#: L2.773.8.78.3) is powered by the automatic mechanical movement, caliber L687.5 with 27 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, a free-sprung balance wheel, and a silicon balance spring for improved accuracy and resistance to magnetism. Based on the Valjoux 7750 and produced exclusively for Longines by ETA, this refined movement drives the hours, minutes, small seconds, date, day, month, moonphase and 24-hour indicator. Power reserve can last up to 66 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted on the watch is a brown alligator leather strap with beige stitching, secured by an 18k rose gold pin buckle. The classic pairing complements the case material and underscores the watch’s refined identity.
