Longines Legend Diver iN 39mm
Longines has unveiled an updated version of its beloved Legend Diver model. With its signature two crowns and internal rotating bezel intact, the new 2023 line stays true to the essence of the original 1959 model (ref. 7042) that inspired it. This timepiece has a rich history, dating back to Longines' earliest dive watches and gaining popularity since its launch in 2007.
Inspired by the iconic Super-Compressor from 1959, the Legend Diver captured enthusiasts' attention with its enduring design and reliable features. Expanding on the success of the 42 mm and 36 mm versions, Longines has introduced a new 39 mm variant to the Legend Diver family. The compressor case with a 39mm diameter and a 12.7mm height is made of stainless-steel with an overall polished finish and brushed casebands, while mounted to the case is a thin narrow steel bezel. On the flip-side is a domed steel screw-down caseback with an engraving of a “diver holding a spear” (which differs from the previous 36 and 42mm versions), while circling around the periphery is the “LEGEND DIVER” inscription. It comes equipped with two large screw-down crowns adorned with a grid pattern on the right-side of the case. The upper crown at the 2 o’clock position serves to move the internal bidirectional rotating disc; while the lower crown is used for setting and winding the mechanical movement. These oversized crowns also differ from the original vintage models circa 1960’s and 70’s that directly inspired this timepiece. In line with earlier versions of the "Legend Diver," these newest iterations maintain their distinctive elongated lugs on both size options. These lugs serve to ensure a comfortable wearing experience while also enhancing the watch's substantial presence on the wrist. All topped by an ultra-domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with several layers of anti-reflective coating on the underside. Water-resistance can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).Time is exhibited on either a black or blue dial with stencil style Arabic numerals for the: 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions, while also providing thick rectangular hour index markers all around. Also accompanied by smaller rectangular and dotted minute index markers and larger Arabic numerals for the: 15, 30 and 45 minute positions.Fans of the series tend to express that much of its grand appeal resides precisely in this vintage inspired design. A true classic that seems slightly revived with these new color options, which will undoubtedly widen its appeal to more horology enthusiasts. All in all a simple dial to read, even with the inclusion of an internal bezel, thanks to the contrasting font style for each section of the numerals. Preserving the brand identity is its hourglass logo under the 12 o’clock position, while the lower-half includes the ‘Automatic’ inscription with their classically cursive text. The arrowhead silvered polished hands, Arabic numerals, plus index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
