The Longines Legend Diver remains one of the strongest heritage-inspired dive watches in the modern market. Originally introduced in 1959 as the reference 7042, the model stood apart with its dual-crown compressor-style architecture, internal rotating bezel, and elegant yet purposeful design. Over the years, the collection evolved through multiple sizes and configurations, but many collectors continued to miss the original full-size no-date format. With the new Longines Legend Diver 59, Longines returns to the classic 42mm concept while refining the execution with updated ergonomics, improved finishing, and modern chronometer-certified mechanics.
The stainless-steel case of the Legend Diver 59 measures 42mm in diameter, 12.85mm thick, and spans 50.1mm lug-to-lug. Brushed and polished surfaces alternate across the compressor-style architecture, preserving the assertive character of the original 1959 model. The proportions remain bold and unmistakably vintage-inspired, while the updated construction improves comfort and daily wearability.
Turning the watch over reveals an angled screw-down caseback engraved with the familiar diver emblem associated with the Legend Diver collection. The slightly inclined construction improves ergonomics on the wrist, while the solid steel rear reinforces the robust tool-watch identity of the model.
Positioned at 2 o’clock is the screw-down crown used to operate the internal bi-directional diving bezel, while the lower crown controls winding and time-setting functions. A domed box-style sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial and enhances the vintage profile of the watch. Water-resistance can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).
The dial of the Legend Diver 59 adopts a lightly grained black finish that gives the watch a more restrained and utilitarian appearance compared to the glossy lacquered dials of earlier 42mm models. The textured surface absorbs light effectively and reinforces the instrument-like character of the watch.
Large Arabic numerals appear at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, accompanied by elongated baton markers and a peripheral minute track positioned on the inner flange. The no-date configuration restores the clean symmetry of the original 1959 reference, while the rhodium-plated sandblasted hands maintain excellent visual contrast against the dark background.
Subtle depth effects come from the combination of the grained dial surface, angled internal bezel, and domed sapphire crystal. All numerals, markers, and hands are filled with light “old radium” Super-LumiNova, giving the watch a warm vintage-inspired glow without compromising nighttime legibility.
