Longines Avigation Type A-7 1935 Black Dial
Back in 2016, Longines reintroduced a truly historic aviator watch with some very unique features that have rarely gotten rehashed in modern times. Now they are following up with the same vintage inspired case, but with a completely different aesthetic approach to the dial design and color scheme.
Unlike the previously bright colored option, the new “Longines Avigation Type A-7 1935” is available in a dark-themed version.
The 41mm case is made of stainless-steel with a peculiar detail that immediately calls for our attention. Unlike the standard norm here the crown is positioned at the 2 o’clock position, which was a more convenient spot for pilots to check the time without taking their hands off the stick, back in the 40's and 50's. This big crown is also shaped in an iconic onion-style form, plus it doubles as a pusher to activate the chronograph functions.
On the flip-side we encounter a solid steel snap-on case back that has been engraved with an aircraft silhouette and the Avigation logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with several layers of anti-reflective coating on the underside. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).
Along with the crown placing this black dial has been shifted by 40 degrees. It features Arabic numerals, followed by a white minute ring. There are two sub-dials: a sub-seconds at 6 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position. A date aperture has also been placed within the sub-seconds.
The steel cathedral-type hands and large Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. In essence this watch brings to mind a “pocket watch for the wrist” concept.
